1. Read and discuss the assigned poems:
- 10th grade: Walt Whitman's I Hear America Singing
- 11 the grade: Emily Dickinson's Hope Is The Thing With Feathers
- What is the author's message
- Who is the author sending his message to?
- How does the author convey or send his message to the reader (audience)?
- Use the poem from class as an example. It used a specific type of figurative languag called a metaphore.
- A metaphore is a special comparasion that compares something you can not see, taste, touch, hear or smell to something you can see, taste, touch, hear or smell. Examples:He is a lion; She is a lioness; My little brother is a puppy)
- Think about what you can see, taste, touch, hear, or smell. What does that thing do? Where is it found? How does it behave?
3. Homework (DUE by THURSDAY 04-10-12) Bring in an example of a poem you like and share it with the class. Be prepared to explain the message and the use of poetic techniques (rhyme, rythm, alliteration, figurative language, etc.)
